Bearing Housings

Bearing housings play a crucial role in mechanical systems, ensuring smooth and efficient operation. Choosing the right type can make a big difference in performance, durability, and maintenance. Here are five common types to consider.

  • Pillow Block: Also known as pedestal housings, these are the most commonly used type for mounted bearings. They provide strong support for shafts where the mounting is parallel to the axis. Pillow blocks come in various configurations with adjustable bolt holes. There’s also a pressed steel version suitable for lighter-duty applications.
  • Flange Housing: The second most popular option, flange housings are typically round or square and secured with two, three, or four bolts. They’re ideal for tensioning pulleys in conveyor belts or elevator systems. Some designs include rod-end units, which have an eye-shaped head and a shank that holds a spherical plain bearing. These can be shoe or "T" types. Flanges may also feature hanger mountings, available in single, double, or triple boss configurations.
  • Special Housings: For unique applications, manufacturers can design custom housing solutions. For example, water-cooled housings are specifically made for use in steel mills with continuous casters. If your project has specific requirements, you can request a tailored housing from the manufacturer.
  • Tapered Roller Bearing Housings: These are used in heavy-duty equipment such as material handlers, air-handling systems, and shredders. Selecting the correct housing depends on the loading and mounting conditions of your project. If the load is at an angle, the mounting bolt must be strong enough to prevent slippage.
  • Cylindrical Roller Bearing Housings: Most cylindrical roller bearings are designed with a single row and a cage. They are used in high-speed or heavy radial load applications. One-piece housings are often recommended for cranes, motors, and conveyor rollers, while split housings are better suited for rail vehicles and dryer cylinders.
  • Split Plummer Block Housing: This type is commonly used for self-aligning ball bearings, spherical roller bearings, and CARB toroidal roller bearings. They come in various designs, making it unnecessary to order special housing for every project. Made primarily from grey cast iron, they are also available in spheroidal graphite iron for added strength. Common applications include mining, metallurgy, and paper production.

Bearing housings are available in different materials, including ductile iron, cast iron, pressed steel for lighter loads, and aluminum. Aluminum requires a tighter fit due to its tendency to expand when heated. Choosing the right material depends on the operating conditions of your system.
