Solar panels: Is your roof suitable?

Meet the Wrights – a couple making smart, eco-conscious choices for a greener future! Based in the picturesque coastal town of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, Jonathan and Kathleen Wright have taken a bold step by switching to solar energy through Solar Together. Jonathan, a 60-year-old business owner, and his wife Kathleen are now powered by the sun, reducing their carbon footprint one panel at a time. This story delves into their journey, the decision-making process, and the benefits of going solar.

The Road to Solar Energy

Q: What inspired you to go solar?

A: “We’ve been thinking about solar for around ten years, especially after the feed-in tariff was introduced. It’s all about being more energy efficient and doing our part for the environment.”

The Wrights’ environmental values align with their business, which is moving toward using recyclable materials. Rising energy costs also played a role in their decision. They wanted to take control of their energy use and reduce their impact on the planet.

“Going solar felt like the natural next step. We’re already committed to sustainability in our business, so extending that to our home made perfect sense.”

Q: How did you first hear about Solar Together?

A: “We found out about it through family in Harwich who had solar panels installed a few years ago. When the chance came up again, we applied – it was all word of mouth.” John adds, “My daughter-in-law’s family used Solar Together, which is how I first heard about it.”

Q: Did the council backing influence your choice?

A: “The council's support was a big plus. When you're investing a lot of money, knowing it's backed by a trusted organization gives peace of mind. It made us feel confident about the project.”

Installation Experience

After settling into their new bungalow in Clacton-on-Sea, the Wrights decided to install a custom solar system. Their south-west facing roof was ideal for solar panels. After years of consideration, rising energy costs and a desire for independence finally pushed them to make the switch.

Project Details:

  • 10 Solar Panels: Optimally placed to capture maximum sunlight.
  • Battery Storage: 6.9 kWh to store excess solar energy.

Cables were run from the roof to the battery and inverter in the loft, then down into the cupboard under the bedroom ceiling.

The Wrights were impressed with the professional and smooth installation process.

Q: How was the installation experience?

A: “It was quick and easy. We didn’t have to do anything – everything was handled for us. The whole process was stress-free.”

Jonathan added, “I love how the panels look. They’re sleek and fit well with the house.”

Results and Impact

Since the system went live, they've seen a significant shift towards self-sufficiency. “We hardly need to buy electricity from the grid,” Jonathan said, noting the benefits during winter and lower tariffs at night.

  • Annual Electricity Use: ~2,500 kWh
  • Estimated Solar Generation: ~3,577 kWh
  • Self-Sufficiency (PV Only): 27%
  • First-Year Savings: Over £500

Q: What do you think about the look of the solar panels?

A: “We don’t even notice them anymore, and neither do our neighbors. It’s become a conversation starter among friends.”

Q: Have you made any changes to save energy?

A: “We’ve switched to LED lights and energy-efficient appliances. We use an air fryer and slow cooker to cut down on energy use.”

Q: How has going solar changed your view on renewable energy?

A: “It’s exactly what we expected. We weren’t looking for miracles, but we’re happy with the results so far and excited to see how it grows over time.”

Q: Do you think solar panels will affect your home's value?

A: “Yes, we believe they’ll add value. As more homes include solar, it will be a desirable feature in the future.”

Their Advice

The Wrights' journey shows how small steps can lead to big impacts. Initially unsure about the cost, Jonathan soon realized solar was a long-term investment, especially with rising energy prices. The support from Solar Together gave him confidence.

Jonathan advises others to consider solar as a smart move. “If you can afford it, it’s definitely worth it. It’s not just about saving money—it’s about helping the planet.”

Now, they're proud advocates for solar energy. “We’ve already talked to people across the street, and they’re interested too,” Jonathan says. “I’m definitely a fan of Solar Together.”

“Some family members have also gone solar, and I recommended Solar Together. I'm definitely an advocate!”

Future Sustainability Plans

Looking ahead, the Wrights are considering options like heat pumps and electric vehicle charging to further reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
