Box Alarm fire in Prospect Heights, 8-25-22

On Thursday at 1:00 PM, Prospect Heights and Wheeling firefighters were called to a fire at 818 Old Willow Road. The RED Center received multiple emergency calls with background shouting and quickly upgraded the incident to a Working Fire shortly after the initial dispatch. Prospect Heights Chief 900 was the first on scene and reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of a two-story multi-unit apartment building, with several residents evacuating. Fire crews made an interior attack and discovered significant fire in the structure, particularly behind an interior wall. The alarm was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm to bring in additional personnel for support. Des Plaines Tower 61 was assigned to vent the roof. Notably, Des Plaines FD Tower 61 has been operating alongside Northbrook FD Tower 12 as a reserve unit for several months, and both units were seen at the scene. Approximately six units sustained damage from the fire, water, or inspection for potential fire spread. However, the Prospect Heights Building Department declared the entire building temporarily uninhabitable for all residents due to the extent of the damage. The response included multiple fire companies: Prospect Heights Engine 39, Squad 9, Engine 900, and Battalion 9; Wheeling Ambulance 24, Engine 23, Truck 24, Engine 2400, Engine 2401, and Battalion 24; Mount Prospect Ambulance 14 and 301; Des Plaines Tower 61; Glenview Engine 8; North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1; Niles Truck 2; Long Grove Squad 55; Buffalo Grove Engine 26; and Northbrook Tower 12. Numerous photos captured the scene, showing firefighters working on the site and the extensive smoke and flames rising from the building. These images, taken by Larry Shapiro, provide a powerful visual account of the incident.
