Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire 12-27-11

On Tuesday evening, a reported fire broke out at 2626 W. Roosevelt Road, a vacant, long block building bordered by Washtenaw Avenue and railroad tracks. Engine 107, stationed just around the corner, was the first to arrive and reported flames on the second floor. Battalion 4 quickly escalated the situation, calling for a still alarm and box alarm due to the size of the two-story brick warehouse. The initial response was defensive, with elevated master streams and a deck gun from Engine 107 deployed along Roosevelt Road. Within 20 minutes, the fire was upgraded to a 2-11, and a 3-11 was requested half an hour later as no units remained in the staging area. A Level I Haz Mat unit was also called in after the 3-11 was activated. Tower Ladder 5, Tower Ladder 10, and Squad 1’s Snorkel worked alongside the master streams, trying to contain the spread. Approximately one hour into the incident, crews began entering the structure to tackle remaining spot fires. The fire was eventually knocked down around 9:30 PM. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene early, with Tim noting that heavy smoke was rolling low along Roosevelt Road, though visible flames were limited. Larry captured several images of the operation, showing Engine 107 using its deck gun in Sector 1, Squad 1 repositioning the Snorkel, and Tower Ladder 5, one of the last American LaFrance/LTI trucks in service, stationed nearby. Other photos highlighted the coordination between Engine 109 supplying water, Truck 7, Tower 10, and the strategic positioning of command units like Command Van 2-7-1 and Light Wagon 9-1-5. These images give a glimpse into the complexity and scale of the response. You can view the full gallery here.
