In a tragic turn of events, two volunteer firefighters lost their lives while responding to a fire in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County, on Wednesday afternoon. According to the coroner, Marvin Gruber, 59, and Zachary Paris, 36, were among those called to tackle the blaze in the 1100 block of Clamtown Road, near Tamaqua.
Paris, who served as the assistant fire chief of the New Tripoli Fire Company in Lehigh County, had only recently joined the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service in Maryland back in February. He graduated from their training program in September and leaves behind a wife and two young daughters. Meanwhile, Gruber was an assistant chief at Northampton Community College’s Department of Public Safety.
The firefighters were reportedly searching for someone believed to be trapped inside the burning house when they encountered severe conditions. Multiple distress signals, or mayday calls, were issued as the situation rapidly worsened. Emergency teams attempted a rescue, pulling both firefighters out of the home and rushing them to St. Luke's Miners Hospital. Unfortunately, both succumbed to their injuries.
Adding to the tragedy, a third individual was discovered on the property but is not a firefighter. Trooper David Beohm of the Pennsylvania State Police mentioned that the identity and circumstances surrounding this person's death remain under investigation. Additionally, two residents of the house are unaccounted for, though their current status remains undisclosed.
Fire departments from three counties mobilized to respond to the intense three-alarm fire. As of now, the exact cause of the blaze is still unknown.
I'm hearing from reliable sources that the mayday calls came approximately an hour into the fire, around 4:45 PM. It seems the firefighters got caught up in extreme heat and smoke conditions on the second floor. Rescuers formed a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) to try and save them, but tragically, the efforts were too late.
