Double LODD in Schuylkill County, PA 12-7-22

West Penn Township, Pennsylvania—This afternoon, tragedy struck when two volunteer firefighters lost their lives while responding to a fire at a residence on Clamtown Road near Tamaqua. According to the coroner, Marvin Gruber, 59, and Zachary Paris, 36, both perished after being called to battle the blaze. Paris, who served as the assistant fire chief of the New Tripoli Fire Company in Lehigh County, joined the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service in Maryland just months ago, quickly earning respect within the department. Gruber, on the other hand, was an esteemed figure at Northampton Community College's Department of Public Safety. Both men were attempting to rescue someone reportedly trapped inside the house when the situation took a dire turn. Multiple distress calls or “maydays” were issued as the intensity of the fire grew. Despite efforts to pull them out, both firefighters succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Adding to the tragedy, a third individual was discovered on the property behind the house, though details regarding their involvement and cause of death remain under investigation by state police. Authorities have stated that the two residents of the home are no longer present, but their current status remains undisclosed. The fire quickly escalated into a three-alarm emergency, prompting response teams from three different counties. As of now, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, leaving many questions unanswered. The firefighting community has been shaken by the loss of these brave individuals, particularly the young family man, Zachary Paris, who leaves behind a wife and two young daughters. Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and fellow firefighters who are mourning this devastating loss. It’s a somber reminder of the risks these heroes take every day to protect others. Rest in peace, brave souls.
