Elmhurst rollover MVA 7-6-11

Elmhurst firefighters were called to a single-vehicle accident on the northbound ramp of Route 83 heading eastbound onto I-290 this morning. Upon arrival, they found a tractor-trailer that had rolled over, trapping the driver inside the cab. The trailer had struck a light pole during the rollover, causing it to buckle and spill part of its load of plastic pellets onto the road. Elmhurst Fire Department units responded with two medic units, a battalion chief, an engine, a tower ladder, and a heavy rescue unit. The extrication process took more than 45 minutes, and due to the severity of the situation, the incident commander requested a medivac. Lifestar Chicago, formerly known as Loyola Lifestar, arrived after the driver was freed and transported him to the hospital by helicopter. Larry Shapiro, who was in the area, captured several photos of the scene. His images show the dramatic moment the Lifestar helicopter landed on the northbound lanes of Route 83 just south of the Eisenhower Expressway. Firefighters worked tirelessly to stabilize the truck using a steel cable from the squad’s front-end winch and rescue jacks. The driver was carefully transferred to the ambulance before being handed over to the medical team for transport. The scene also showed the aftermath of the accident, with the trailer split open and debris scattered across the grass. The tractor had been cut apart to free the driver, highlighting the complexity of the rescue operation. Bensenville Fire Department units were also on site, helping to secure the landing zone as the helicopter prepared for takeoff. More photos from the incident can be viewed in the gallery below.
