The mixing process is typically carried out on a two-roll mill (open mill). This machine consists of two horizontally placed hollow metal cylinders (rolls) that rotate towards each other. The gap between the rolls can be adjusted, usually ranging from 2 to 20 mm. This allows for efficient mixing and processing of various rubber compounds.
Rolls Friction Ratio
The two rolls operate at different speeds, with the back roll rotating faster than the front one. This difference in speed, known as the friction ratio, creates a shearing action at the nip, which helps disperse the ingredients and keep the compound on the front roll. A common friction ratio is 1.25:1.
Mastication Operation
To begin, set the roll gap to 2 mm and maintain the roll temperature at 70 ± 5°C. Add the rubber into the mill’s nip and form it into a continuous sheet on the front roll. Using a hand knife, make two ¾-cuts from each side, allowing the rubber to pass through the nip several times until a smooth rolling bank is formed. This process ensures proper mastication, making the rubber softer and less viscous.
Initial Addition of Ingredients
Adjust the nip opening to 2.5 mm. Add activators (and antidegradants if using synthetic rubber) to the rolling bank. Make two ¾-cuts from each side, then cut through the rubber at one end, remove it, and place it in the nip at the other end to ensure a uniform blend.
