Lack of gas in the domestic tire technical field competition and development

A run-flat tire, also known as a run-flat tire or a zero-pressure tire, refers to a tire that can still travel a certain distance at a safe speed in the event of a loss of pressure. The two main performance indicators are the driving speed and distance after the tire loses pressure. At present, the internationally accepted speed is 80-88km/h and the distance traveled is 80km.

For example, according to the data provided by Bridgestone Corporation of Japan, they developed the “POTENZA RE050 RFT” series of run-flat tires. When the air pressure drops to 0 kPa, under the normal conditions of use, it can still reach speeds below 80 km/h. Driving to 80km, and while ensuring RFT performance (permanency after bursting), it can also combine high handling and comfort. Another example is the United States Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company declared that they developed the RunOnFlat series of run-flat tires. After a leak, the vehicle can still travel safely at a speed of 80kin/h for 250km, and the control performance is equivalent to a traditional tire at 1kg. Above the inflation pressure performance.

In order to understand the status of development of tire technology in the field of runaway tires in China, we conducted research on Chinese patent information in this technical field with the help of the patent database that was published by the China Intellectual Property Office.

What needs to be explained here is that, first, the data research period ends on December 31, 2008. Second, the extracted patent information includes authorized invention patents, invention patent applications that have been initially reviewed and disclosed by the Chinese Intellectual Property Office. According to the provisions of the Chinese patent law, the latter type has also been temporarily protected in China; thirdly, this paper also extracts utility model patent data, as a relatively small number (28 items) and a large proportion of non-service inventions (25 items) , accounting for about 90 of the total, in the following analysis, we basically based on the second data, and referred to as the invention patent (application).

I. Distribution and Research of Invention Patent (Application) for Abortion

Figures 1 to 5 show the complete data of Chinese invention patents (applications) in the field of runaway tires since the implementation of the patent system in China. From these data, the following conclusions can be drawn.

1. As of December 31, 2008, there were 125 Chinese invention patents (applications) in the field of tires capable of running short of gas, involving 16 companies in eight countries and 20 natural persons in five countries. What needs to be explained here is that neither universities nor independent scientific research institutions have appeared in inventions or utility models. Therefore, there are only two types of patents (applications): enterprises and natural persons.

2. Of the 125 patents (applications), 19 were from Chinese companies and individuals, and 106 from foreign companies and individuals. It is clear that foreign countries have absolute advantages in this field of technology. Among them, the top three are Japan, France, and the United States, respectively, and the share of them reached 52.4%, 26.2%, and 19.1%, respectively, and the total share reached 87.7% (see Figure 1 for detailed data).

3. Of the 125 patents (applications), 104 were enterprises, which was 83% of the total. In particular, here is to emphasize that: (1) There is only one domestic company, and Taiwan Nangang Tire Co., Ltd., while the other 18 patents (applications) involved a total of 17 natural persons; (2) 106 foreigners received The number of enterprises is 103. It can be seen that companies, especially foreign companies, are the main players in technological innovation in this field, while Chinese companies are basically not involved in this technology field. Detailed comparative data can be seen in Figure 2.

4. Figure 3 shows the distribution of the 125 patent (application) years. From this figure, it can be seen that the development of this technical field can be divided into two phases.

The first stage was 1988-1996. The characteristics of this stage include: (1) The quantity is small, only 7% of the total; (2) All are proposed by natural persons, and the company does not intervene. We believe that this stage is the embryonic stage of tireless tire technology, and practice has also proved that no actual benefits have been seen.

The second phase began in 1997. The main feature of this phase is that foreign companies begin to enter the field. Figure 4 shows the distribution of 103 patents (applications) for foreign companies during the year. From this figure, it can be seen that the start of foreign companies started from 1997, once deposited, and then entered the fast track around 2001, and basically showed an upward trend year by year. What needs to be explained here is that there is a certain time difference in patent approval. The drop in the curve after 2006 may be caused by the time difference.

In the modern enterprise competition, it is a very common practice to use the method of applying for a patent to seize the technical field. From the above data, it can be seen that from 2001 onwards, foreign companies have begun to prepare for involving in tireless tire technology in China.

Second, corporate rankings and research

In order to further understand the competition and development of the tyres that can run dry. We also conducted research in accordance with the amount of patents (applications) for each company and the annual distribution of applications, and reached the following points.

(1) Patent technology (applications) in the field of run-flat tires involves a total of 16 companies, including 15 foreign companies and 1 Chinese company (1). Therefore, no matter the number of companies or the number of patents (applications), foreign companies have absolutely The advantages.

2. The top five companies are: Michelin of France (23 items), Bridgestone Corporation of Japan (20 items), Sumitomo Rubber Industries Co., Ltd. of Japan (14 items), Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company (12 items). ), Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. (12 items), a total of 81, accounting for about 78% of the total business, apparently the five companies in the field of run-flat tires in our country has a dominant position. The most important of these are Michelin in France and Bridgestone in Japan. The two companies' patents (applications) account for 41% of the total. Figure 5 shows the amount and share of 16 corporate patents (applications).

3. Figure 4 also shows the annual distribution trend of foreign companies' applications. These figures can help us understand the time when companies are involved in tyres with run-flat tires. The data shows that among the top five companies, Goodyear was the first (1997), followed by Michelin (1999), Bridgestone, Yokohama Rubber (2002), and Sumitomo Rubber (2004). In addition, we also noticed that Toyo Rubber and Korean tires also started to engage in this technology field in 2006.

4. The proportion of requests for disclosure in advance after 2005 has increased, and competition among companies in this technology area has intensified. For example, 6 out of the 9 applications filed by Michelin after 2005 did not exceed 7 months from filing date to public date, compared with only 2 cases that did not exceed 7 months before 2005, and all others were about 3 years old. Another example is that Goodyear's 7 time difference after 2005 basically remained at 6 months, and the longest was only 11 months, and Sumitomo's all applications were maintained at about 6 months, the longest is only 8 months. In addition, two patent applications filed by Korea Tyre Co., Ltd. entered in 2006, the above time difference did not exceed 6 months, and the shortest one was 5 months and 4 days.

According to the provisions of the Chinese Patent Law, after a preliminary examination of a patent application for an invention, it shall be disclosed within 18 months from the date of filing. However, if the applicant requests early disclosure, it may disclose it in advance. The above data shows that several companies have adopted the method of requiring early disclosure when applying for a patent, so that temporary protection can be obtained within a short period of time. In general, if there is an increase in the requirement for early disclosure, it indicates that the enterprise has a clear intention in the field of beachhead technology, and the speed is also increasing.

The survey data shows that except for Bridgestone, which basically maintains a steady pace, the above time difference is basically about 2 years.

This paper uses Chinese patent information to conduct a preliminary analysis of the tireless tire technology field. In summary, in the tireless tire technology field, foreign companies have more obvious technological advantages, and the speed of catching the beach is relatively fast, and the purpose is very clear. It is to occupy the tireless tire technology field in China. Therefore, Chinese auto companies must make a big progress in innovation or innovation awareness. Otherwise, they will face more severe challenges in the market competition in this field. We hope that the above data can provide some help for auto companies to grasp development trends.
