MVA with extrication and Haz Mat in Lyons, 4-21-19
Early on Sunday morning (April 21, 2019), emergency responders from Lyons Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of Forest View Terminal Drive and Harlem Avenue following a serious collision involving a passenger vehicle and a gasoline tanker. According to reports, the car had become wedged beneath the massive tanker, leaving the driver trapped inside. Firefighters quickly mobilized to stabilize the scene and began working to extricate the trapped individual.
Due to the hazardous nature of the incident—given the involvement of a fuel tanker—the emergency response team called in additional support. A specialized Foam Task Force was urgently summoned from O'Hare International Airport to assist the local firefighting units. This team brought with them essential equipment and expertise to mitigate any potential fire or explosion risks posed by the spilled fuel.
As crews worked diligently to ensure safety, images captured at the scene revealed the dramatic efforts being made to manage the situation. Photos taken by Tim Olk and Gordon J. Nord, Jr., show firefighters clad in protective gear as they carefully applied foam to the affected area. The application of foam is a critical step in preventing fires when fuel leaks are present, helping to reduce the risk of ignition and protect both rescuers and those involved.
Further images highlight the impressive resources brought to bear during the operation, including specialized vehicles such as Chicago Fire Department's ARFF (Aircraft Rescue Firefighting) unit, which played a key role in deploying the necessary foam blankets across the scene. The coordinated efforts of all involved teams were crucial in managing this high-stakes incident effectively.
While the initial report focuses on the mechanics of the rescue and safety protocols, it’s clear that the quick action and collaboration between various agencies prevented what could have been a far more catastrophic outcome. As the cleanup and investigation continue, the community remains grateful for the professionalism and bravery demonstrated by all first responders on the scene that day.
