Russian researchers develop automatic track wear detection device

[China Instrument Network Instrument Development] Track wear will reduce train safety and increase fuel costs. Researchers at Tomsk Institute of Technology in Russia have developed a highly accurate alternative to manually measuring the degree of wear on railway rails. .

According to developers, the most common method for measuring rail wear is to manually measure with movable brackets, calipers, and stencils. On a busy railway line, it is measured by a special train equipped with an automatic system, but this method is too expensive and can only be used on large trunk lines. Newly developed devices are mainly used on those railways that are still using manual inspections.
The device is a metal structure. When it is used, it is fixed on the track. The laser sensor is used to measure the distance from the track to the orbit surface at 300 points at a time, so that high-precision data can be obtained. The measurement process takes only about 5 seconds. In addition, the researchers also developed a supporting mobile phone application software. Based on the measured data, the outline of the track was displayed on a smartphone and compared with national standards.
At present, Tomsk University of Technology has produced test prototypes. Staff at the Electronics and Automation Equipment Department are improving their mechanical components and studying more accurate mathematical algorithms.
