Safety valve installation and piping design points

1. A safety valve should be installed in an upright position and as close as possible to the equipment or piping it is protecting. If it cannot be placed in close proximity, the total pressure drop from the protected equipment or pipe to the safety valve inlet must not exceed 3% of the relief pressure. This ensures optimal performance and accurate pressure release. 2. An overhaul platform should be provided for the safety valve to facilitate maintenance and inspection. When considering the lifting of the safety valve, the weight and center of gravity should be taken into account. If necessary, a hoist or boom should be installed to assist in safe handling during installation or removal. 3. The inlet piping of the safety valve should use long-radius elbows to minimize flow resistance and reduce turbulence, ensuring smooth and efficient operation of the valve. 4. The design of the outlet piping should take into account the back pressure, which should not exceed a certain percentage of the relief pressure. For standard spring-loaded safety valves, the back pressure should not exceed 10% of the set pressure to maintain proper functionality and prevent premature opening. 5. If the discharge from the safety valve enters a vent line or a flare system that contains condensate or condensable gases, the outlet of the safety valve should be positioned higher than the main line. Otherwise, appropriate drainage measures should be implemented to prevent liquid accumulation and potential blockage. 6. When discharging into a closed system, the safety valve outlet pipe should be connected at a 45° angle to the top of the discharge manifold. This helps prevent condensate from flowing back into the branch line and also reduces the back pressure on the safety valve, improving its overall performance. 7. When a shut-off valve is installed on both the inlet and outlet of the safety valve, a single-gate valve should be used. The valve should remain open and sealed to prevent unauthorized operation. The stem should be installed horizontally to avoid the valve disc from falling off if the stem becomes eroded or loose. If a bypass valve is provided, it should be kept closed and properly sealed to ensure the safety valve operates as intended.
