Vintage Chicago fire scene photos
This message comes from Eric Haak: The first photo shows Engine 48's station on the far right, with a huge 5-11 fire burning just across the elevated tracks. The second image is a close-up of what I believe to be the very first snorkel basket that Bill Post mentioned a few weeks ago. This fire was classified as a 3-11 on November 2, 1959, at 1109 W. 63rd Street. It's a rare and interesting look at how the snorkel was used in an early fire scene, showing the firefighters in action from the basket.
