A significant fire erupted yesterday at Pier 11 Marina located on the city's far south side, causing severe damage to at least four vessels. Initial estimates suggest that the damages could exceed $1.1 million. The incident occurred just after 10 a.m., prompting immediate response from both the Chicago and Dolton fire departments. They were dispatched to the marina at 826 East 138th Street, situated along the Little Calumet River, marking the southern edge of Chicago.
Firefighters initially tackled three burning boats, but as they worked to extinguish the flames, the fire spread to a fourth vessel. It appears that the fire originated when a recreational boater was attempting to winterize his boat. This process involves covering the boat with a plastic sheet and securing it with heat. During this procedure, the individual was utilizing a propane tank, which somehow led to the boat catching fire.
Among the losses was a historically significant vessel used for tours along the Chicago River. This boat was part of the fleet owned and operated by Chicago First Lady Cruises and its sister company, Mercury Cruises.
