I just got back from covering an intense scene in Evanston where firefighters managed to save not one but four pets during a small apartment fire last night. The incident happened late Tuesday evening in a four-story courtyard building on the 600 block of Sheridan Road. Thankfully, the fire was contained to just one unit on the rear first floor, so it didn’t spread further.
As the firefighters wrapped up their initial response, they decided to do a thorough secondary sweep of the area to ensure everyone—human or otherwise—was safe. That’s when they found all four pets huddled together inside the affected unit. Two of the cats and two of the dogs were already outside by the time I arrived, but one cat and one dog needed immediate attention. Firefighters used specialized pet oxygen masks to help revive them, and thankfully, all four animals made it out alive. No humans were injured either, which is really great news.
