House fire in Arlington Heights, 3-20-19

Late Wednesday night (3/20/19), emergency responders from Arlington Heights were dispatched to 209 LaSalle Street following reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, police officers observed signs of fire in the garage. Firefighters quickly confirmed the severity of the situation, noting heavy flames engulfing both the first and second floors at the rear of the property, as well as extending into the garage. Initial firefighting efforts focused on deploying water lines to combat the blaze both in the garage and at the back of the building. Complications arose when a water main burst just two houses west of the hydrant being used by Engine 4. Recognizing the urgency, Engine 3 swiftly laid a supply line from an alternative main further down the street to support Engine 4’s operations. Meanwhile, Arlington Heights Engine 2 stationed itself at another hydrant on the opposite end of the block, providing crucial water supplies to Tower 1 and Palatine Quint 83. Additionally, Buffalo Grove Tower 25 was on-site, acting as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) company to ensure firefighter safety. As the fire raged on, images captured by Larry Shapiro revealed the intense efforts of the firefighters. Tower ladders stretched high into the night sky, with firefighters ascending to tackle the flames from above. Fire engines, including multiple units from the Arlington Heights Fire Department, stood ready, their lights illuminating the dark scene. Despite the challenges posed by the ruptured water main, the coordinated response ensured that the fire was brought under control efficiently. The incident highlights the dedication and teamwork of local emergency services, who worked tirelessly through the night to protect lives and property.
