The Burnham Fire Department was called to a fire at a three-story apartment building located at 14000 S. Torrence Avenue yesterday. Upon arrival, the first responding units encountered heavy smoke on the ground floor and quickly escalated the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm. In response, mutual aid companies from nearby departments, including Calumet City, Dolton, South Holland, and Munster, Indiana, arrived on scene to assist. The fire was quickly brought under control, and no injuries were reported.
Tim Olk captured the aftermath of the incident, arriving after the flames had been extinguished. Despite that, he managed to take several compelling photos showing the scene and the equipment that responded. These images offer a rare look at the coordinated effort between multiple fire departments working together during a large-scale emergency.
One photo shows firefighters taking a moment to rest after successfully knocking down the fire. Another highlights Calumet City Truck 309 positioned in the 'A' Sector, supporting hand lines as part of the operation. Burnham Engine 2014, a 2007 HME Ahrens-Fox, was the first engine to arrive on the scene, while South Holland Engine 665, built by Smeal on an HME chassis, was also on site to provide assistance.
Burnham Engine 2016, a 1996 HME SFO Luverne, was staged further down the street, ready to support as needed. Meanwhile, the Munster Indiana Fire Department, a member of MABAS Division 24, sent their Truck 2221, an American LaFrance/LTI tower ladder, to the scene. Lastly, the Third District Fire Chief's Association canteen unit was present to help with firefighter rehabilitation.
