Fatal crash in Prospect Heights, 8-27-22

From the Prospect Heights Fire District: At around 0549 hours, Prospect Heights Squad 9 received dispatch for a car fire at Motel 6, located at 540 Milwaukee Avenue. Before they even left the station, the call was updated to include an accident with potential entrapment. This brought Battalion 9, Ambulance 9, Chief 900, along with additional support from Wheeling Ambulance 23, Ambulance 24, Engine 23, Tower 24, and Mount Prospect Truck 14. As multiple calls came in indicating that the vehicle had collided with the levee wall and fallen into the Des Plaines River, reports soon followed suggesting there might be victims in the river, possibly children. In response, a swift water rescue team was deployed, including Wheeling Battalion 24 and Dive Squad 24, Dive 63 and Squad 63 from Des Plaines, and a Lincolnshire-Riverwoods boat. The crash occurred just south of Motel 6, near the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and River Road. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered an SUV that had breached the guardrail and plunged over the concrete levee wall into the Des Plaines River. One occupant had been ejected, while others potentially remained inside the vehicle. First responders quickly set up ladders on the levee wall and descended the embankment to reach the burning car, extinguishing the flames before initiating a shore-based search operation. Unfortunately, the ejected individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The subsequent search of the river failed to uncover any additional victims. The Des Plaines River levee is a reinforced concrete structure running alongside the eastern side of Milwaukee Avenue, stretching from Palatine Road to just north of Euclid/Lake Avenue. The wall is approximately 12 inches thick and extends several feet below ground level to prevent erosion. Its height varies, ranging from a few feet to over ten feet tall. At the site of this incident, the levee stood about 5-6 feet high. Evidence suggests that the collision may have displaced the top portion of the levee wall, pushing it roughly two inches closer to the river.
