Thursday evening turned into a tense scene when both the Wheeling and Prospect Heights Fire Departments were dispatched to the Crescent Cardboard Company at 100 West Willow Road. An industrial accident had occurred, and firefighters were urgently needed to help extricate a worker whose arm had unfortunately become trapped between the rollers of a cardboard-pressing machine. The situation was critical, and it took the firefighters nearly 70 minutes of careful work to finally free the injured man. Once freed, Flight For Life was immediately called in to transport the patient to the nearest trauma center.
I arrived at the scene shortly after the incident unfolded, along with Tim Olk, to document the entire patient transport process. As I got closer, the intensity of the situation became clear. The Flight For Life helicopter landed across the street from where the accident happened, ready to assist. Larry Shapiro, who was also present, captured some incredible photos of the event.
