House fire in Prospect Heights, 1-26-22

From the Prospect Heights Fire District: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 26, 2022 PROSPECT HEIGHTS — On Wednesday evening, January 26, at approximately 7:48 p.m., the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District received a call reporting a fire at a residence located at 108 Patricia Street in Prospect Heights. When our firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered flames engulfing the attic of a two-story house. Thick smoke was billowing out from all sides of the roof, but fortunately, the fire had not yet spread inside the home. Within just a few minutes, the first responding engine had its hose operational and successfully doused the initial blaze. Our teams then concentrated their efforts on containing the fire that had spread within the roof and attic area. Concurrently, a thorough search of the premises was conducted to ensure all occupants were safely evacuated. Through swift action, the fire was brought under control and fully extinguished in less than 20 minutes using two hose lines and multiple fire apparatus units. Approximately 40 firefighters were part of the response team, who diligently worked for nearly an hour afterward to check for any remaining hotspots or signs of fire spread to ensure the area was completely safe. In addition to the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District and the Wheeling Fire Department, which were initially dispatched, support was also provided by the Des Plaines, Glenview, Mount Prospect, and Libertyville fire departments, along with the Elk Grove Township, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Long Grove fire protection districts. Altogether, a total of five engines, five water tankers, two aerial trucks, two ambulances, one rescue squad, and several chief officers were present at the incident site. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Prospect Heights Fire Protection District would like to remind residents to always have two clear escape routes from their homes, to verify that smoke alarms are installed and functioning properly, and to establish an emergency plan in case of fire or other disasters. It's important to note that fire sprinklers can significantly reduce risks and damage. If this building had been equipped with fire sprinklers, the initial fire could have been contained or even extinguished before the arrival of the fire department, potentially preventing further escalation. --- Attached are some images taken by Larry Shapiro, capturing the scene and the hard work of our firefighters.
