Lake Villa is on the site
Recently, another fire department from Lake County (Division 4) has joined our website. The Lake Villa Fire Department, Lake Villa Fire District, and Lake Villa Rescue Squad represent an intriguing blend of organizational structures and operational models. Currently, they maintain three fire stations located in Lake Villa and Lindenhurst. The main station in downtown Lake Villa, along with most of its associated apparatus, is owned by the privately-operated Lake Villa Fire Department. This department conducts its own fundraising efforts while also receiving payment for contract services provided by the Lake Villa Fire District. Meanwhile, the other two stations and their firefighting vehicles are owned by the Lake Villa Fire District. All ambulances across these three stations—painted in the classic white-and-blue color scheme—are owned and operated by the Lake Villa Rescue Squad. The downtown station of the Lake Villa Fire Department is a fascinating structure that has seen three distinct additions over the years. Today, the building features eight bays, each addition marked by a stone engraved with the year it was built. The newest addition to the fleet is a 2009 Pierce Arrow XT engine stationed at the first location. Photo by Larry Shapiro. With the exception of a 1973 CF-Mack/Welch, all fire-suppression equipment is manufactured by Pierce. This includes four engines, a pumper/squad, a 105-foot aerial ladder, and two tankers, all of which are built on Dash chassis. The most recent acquisition is a 2009 Arrow XT engine placed at Station 1. The Lake Villa Rescue Squad operates five Ford/Osage Type III ambulances in the traditional blue-and-white color scheme. Two new units are on order and will be painted red, bearing the insignia of the Lake Villa Fire District. Currently, the rescue squad has five Ford/Osage Type III ambulances, painted in the signature blue-and-white color scheme. As noted earlier, two additional ambulances are on the way, and these will be red, featuring the logo of the Lake Villa Fire District, similar to the existing ones. The Mack/Pierce engine, shortly after its acquisition. At the time, it was Engine 2420 and had not yet been fitted with the Wil-Burt Nightscan rooftop light. Lake Villa had long been a loyal Mack customer, and even after Mack ceased producing fire trucks, many former clients continued purchasing the CF chassis, having other manufacturers finish the builds. Lake Villa transitioned to Pierce with this unit; by the time they were ready to buy their next vehicle, Mack no longer offered the CF chassis. Photo by Larry Shapiro. This engine from Annandale, New Jersey serves as an example of a four-door modification done by Mack. The rear doors are recessed, flat, and conceal the steps. Originally built in 1981, this engine underwent refurbishment and updates in 1996 by The Swab Wagon Company. Photo by Larry Shapiro. Three particularly unique units grace the Lake Villa fleet. One is a pristine 1933 Pirsch antique in excellent condition. The other two are reminiscent of the era when all Lake Villa engines were constructed by Mack using CF chassis. There’s a 1973 CF-Mack, which was retrofitted with a new body complete with high-side compartments by Welch, and another from 1989/1990, a CF-Mack/Pierce hybrid. A distinctive feature of this particular unit is the four-door conversion crafted by Pierce. When Mack enclosed the CF cab with four doors, the rear doors were flat, straight, and recessed several inches into the body's contour. Pierce fabricated the enclosure using a set of front doors for the rear of the cab, preserving the same contours and body lines from front to back. One of the highlights of the collection is this 1933 Pirsch antique in great condition. Photo by Hank Sajovic. Here we see one of the CF Mack engines that preceded the Pierce units in Lake Villa.
