The Only Way to China's Buses Going Global

At the 2016-2017 China Bus Industry Development Summit Forum held recently, Wang Jian, a public transportation scholar from Chongqing Jiaotong University, delivered a keynote speech entitled “The Global Influence of China's Bus and Bus Industry”. Through his actual inspections in various parts of the world over the past year, Wang Jian believes that the number of Chinese passenger cars in the international market is increasing day by day, but there is still a gap with the advanced level of international passenger car manufacturing. This gap has a certain relationship with the development concept of bus companies.

Previously, when we analyzed and studied the situation of Chinese passenger cars in overseas markets, we usually paid attention to the population, passenger car demand and production volume of the world. Wang Jian said that he has fully experienced the status of Chinese passenger cars in overseas markets through field visits in the past year, which is indeed a matter worthy of domestic bus industry's pride.

■ China remained the world's first passenger car sales

Wang Jian told reporters, through visits Istanbul, Turkey, Russia, Moscow, Bangalore, India, and South America, Cuba and Colombia and other places, we can really see the quality of China's passenger cars in recent years, It is constantly improving. There have been many achievements in the development of overseas markets. In Cuba and other countries, the market share of passenger cars in China is very high. Cuba’s large passenger cars generally use the products manufactured by Yutong Bus.

With the increase of the urban population and the increase of social activities, governments of all countries will invest more in public transport, which is the source of development of the passenger car industry. In the global bus production statistics, Asian passenger car manufacturers account for 70%. Of these, bus manufacturers from China account for about 50%; in the statistics of the production of large passenger cars in the world, China’s Yutong Bus and Jinlong Bus are ranked second. Three, they are representatives of Chinese bus manufacturers. In the world's large-scale urban bus industry, the average annual growth rate is 8%, and in the future China's urban bus market will continue to be a large business segment; the annual growth rate of electric buses is approximately 20%. This growth trend is worth our country’s Bus companies value it.

In the international bus industry, one country has to mention that it is Turkey. Prior to this, Turkey's passenger car manufacturing level was comparable to that of China. However, through the development in recent years, Turkey's passenger car manufacturing level has been rapidly increased, which is basically comparable to that of European passenger cars. The reasons for this are not unrelated to the relocation of production lines by passenger car manufacturers in Western Europe in recent years.

According to the statistics of the International Automobile Manufacturers Association (OICA), passenger car production in Sweden, Germany, and France is decreasing year by year, while passenger car production in Turkey is increasing year by year. The number of large passenger cars produced in the country is larger than that of the EU-27 countries. The total production of passenger cars is quite similar. In the past, the twin-joint low-floor buses that were common in Europe have recently started production in Turkish passenger car manufacturers. Wang Jian believes that the current level of passenger car manufacturing in China is somewhat inferior to Turkey.

â– Technological innovation is the only way for China's passenger car development

in the international market, the European manufacturer of passenger cars produced by passenger cars is considered to be the best quality. In fact, European passenger car manufacturers are also leading the concept of passenger car technology development. At the Hanover Motor Show last year, Mercedes-Benz's unmanned futuristic passenger car broke through the definition of a concept car and was already used on the actual road.

Among the passenger car products produced in Europe, there are not many models using wheel hub motors and wheel-side motor drive axles. This technology has already passed the trial period in the European market and has become a commercial product. It has begun to be used on a large scale. Electric drive is the future of passenger cars. In view of the development trend, in contrast to the driving forms of domestic transmission power and new energy passenger vehicles, wheel hub motors and wheel-side motor axles have only a small-scale trial and have not reached the level of large-scale commercialization.

Wang Jian said that the current achievements of Chinese passenger cars in the international market are more derived from higher price/performance ratio and relative price competitiveness. This advantage does not necessarily last long. He believes that India's passenger vehicle development momentum is worthy of attention by domestic passenger car companies, and passenger cars produced in India will have more price advantages. From the perspective of the export market, Chinese buses are exported to South America and the Far East. However, in India, they rarely see Chinese buses. On the contrary, Volvo, Scania and Mercedes-Benz have a certain market in India. This phenomenon is worthy of consideration and consideration by domestic passenger car companies.

India's passenger car industry is developing rapidly. Indian bus manufacturers also produce low-floor urban passenger cars, which can be used as airport shuttle buses and can also be used as city bus buses. Indian sleeper bus is still the most popular mainstream product on the market, and this A model has been banned from selling in the domestic market.

Wang Jian believes that Chinese bus companies still need to continuously emancipate their minds and get rid of unreasonable administrative constraints. China's bus industry will do more in the future.

â– Chinese bus technology needs to get rid of rigid thinking

In the annual E-mobility Index published by Roland Berger, the number of electric buses in China ranks first, but the value of products is relatively low. In the future overseas development of Chinese passenger cars, it is necessary to pay more attention to continuously improving the value of products.

Is battery electric bus the only new energy bus technology development route? In all parts of the world, passenger cars with various forms of fuel and technology can be seen. In South America, passenger cars that use ethanol and natural gas as fuel are mainstream products; biofuels are also one of the technological development routes of many international passenger car companies, and the commercialization of hydrogen fuels is becoming more and more realistic. For Chinese bus companies, they can provide diversified technical solutions in overseas markets and will have better market performance. Wang Jian said that only products that meet the needs of local users can be called good products. As a transportation vehicle, the most important thing for a passenger vehicle is to rely on the matching of the power system to become an efficient and reliable transportation tool, a variety of power systems, fuel selection, and different degrees of hybrid power systems. The bus companies respond to market The process of effective integration of elements is the way to highlight the technical competitiveness of bus manufacturing companies.

In addition, the development trend of the bus industry is closely related to policies and regulations. Wang Jian said that for the passenger car industry, the internationally accepted laws and regulations are the safety of passenger cars and seats, and the emission limit standards; the industry management departments limit the service life of passenger cars and the restrictions on sleeper buses to a large extent, restricting China. Advances in passenger car technology. Wang Jian emphasized that policies and regulations should be the driving force for the diversified development of passenger car technology.

Wang Jian used the lightweight module sandwich panel body technology as an example to illustrate that European passenger car manufacturers are making changes in industrial technology. By adopting a sandwich panel body that is similar to the track train body structure, lightweight design is realized, and the passenger car assembly process is optimized. , Maintaining advanced status; and in the domestic passenger car manufacturers, this concept and technology does not seem to be a better response.

Finally, Wang Jian pointed out that only by continuously emancipating the mind and realizing technological innovation can the technological development of Chinese passenger cars take a higher level. To achieve this goal will not only benefit the domestic passenger car market, but will also increase the brand influence of Chinese passenger cars in overseas markets.
