Working fire in Chicago, 1-1-17

It's just after midnight, and I’m writing to share what I witnessed earlier tonight involving the brave firefighters of Chicago’s 5th Battalion. They kicked off the New Year by responding to a basement fire on the 6300 block of South Evans. From the very beginning, the situation was intense. Firefighters initially went inside the structure to tackle the blaze but were later ordered to evacuate due to safety concerns. Once they cleared the building, the strategy shifted. The truck was repositioned, and Squad 5 brought their Snorkel into action in Sector A. Using both the Snorkel and multiple hand lines, the team managed to get the fire under control. Afterward, firefighters were able to re-enter the building to ensure everything was completely extinguished. The house involved in this incident is a large, old frame structure that has been empty for several years now. It’s always heartbreaking to see such a place go up in flames, especially when it’s been neglected for so long. Still, the professionalism and dedication of these firefighters never cease to amaze me. I want to extend my gratitude to all those who worked tirelessly through the night to keep everyone safe. Here’s hoping that 2017 brings brighter days ahead for everyone, including the hardworking men and women of the Chicago Fire Department. [Attached are some photos I captured during the event. The first shows an aerial ladder reaching the roof while battling the flames. The second captures the heavy smoke billowing from the structure. In the third, you can see Engine 63 parked nearby, ready to assist. Another image highlights the firefighters working with a hose line, while the last two focus on Squad 5 and Engine 47 respectively, showcasing their pivotal role in controlling the fire.] Wishing you all a fantastic start to the new year!
