Working fire in Chicago, 1-1-17

I just received some updates from Eric Haak about a fire incident that happened early this New Year's Day in Chicago’s 5th Battalion. Firefighters were called to action on the 6300 block of South Evans where they encountered a challenging basement blaze. Initially, crews went inside the structure to assess the situation and started an aggressive interior attack. However, they soon received orders to evacuate the building due to safety concerns. Once outside, the tactical approach shifted. The truck positioned at the front of the building was moved, and Squad 5 deployed their Snorkel in sector A. Using both the Snorkel and multiple hand lines, firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. After ensuring the situation was stable, the teams were permitted back inside to finish the job and fully extinguish any remaining embers. The property involved was a large, wooden-frame house that had been unoccupied for quite some time. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and I extend my best wishes to everyone for a happy and prosperous 2017! Attached are some powerful images captured by Eric Haak that provide a glimpse into the intense efforts of the firefighters. The first photo shows an aerial ladder extending towards the roof during the fire. Another image highlights the thick smoke billowing from the burning house. There are also shots of Engine 63 and Squad 5 in action, showcasing the impressive equipment and teamwork. One particularly striking photo features firefighters wielding a hose line as they battle the flames head-on. Additionally, there are images of Engine 47 and Squad 5 further illustrating the scale of the operation. These visuals truly capture the dedication and bravery of the firefighting community, and I am grateful to have them shared here. Stay safe out there!
