Continental launches LED lighting control unit

The application of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to new automobiles has become an important trend. Continental’s recently introduced intelligent lighting control unit has many advantages that allow drivers of cars and trucks to observe the road ahead more clearly under LED lights at night.

At present, light-emitting diodes have been used in headlights of cars and trucks. In the past, LEDs, which were mainly used for daytime driving lights, taillights, or flashing lights, and other auxiliary lighting functions, are now increasingly used for low-beam and high-beam lights. Unlike traditional halogen bulbs, LED lighting fixtures require more complex electronic control systems to cover all lighting functions. Continental Group is leading the development of such systems. The new lighting control unit is rapidly leading the revolution in automotive lighting systems to achieve a clearer vision and improve safety. The new passenger car and commercial vehicle electronic control system has been put into operation.

Take full advantage of LED technology

LEDs have a number of advantages over bulbs or xenon headlamps. In addition to helping designers develop lamps with a unique shape, light-emitting diodes are also characterized by high efficiency and long service life. They also have lower energy consumption, impact resistance, and do not require maintenance.

However, in order to make full use of the advantages of light-emitting diodes, electronic control devices must be used. This is because unlike conventional light bulbs, LEDs cannot be powered directly by the onboard power supply voltage. Therefore, it is necessary to use electronic devices to monitor the on-board power supply voltage. Electronic control devices use pulse width modulation to control light intensity. If the LED is used solely for signal lights, such as flash, width, or tail lights, there is relatively no problem. However, since LEDs are also used for active steering headlights, a large number of new adjustment tasks must be handled by electronic control devices.

To this end, Continental has introduced innovative lighting control devices that can centrally control all lighting functions. The electronics developed in the first phase can adjust eight light levels. Each LED group can be individually controlled, can adjust the light and shade according to road conditions, does not need other mechanical devices to transform, making it better than any previous method, even the most sophisticated mechanical systems can not achieve this effect. Special lighting for highways or country roads, gentle conversion of far and near light, excellent illumination curves, or widening of the intersection vision – Continental's light regulators can support all of these functions in less than one second. Give designers and security engineers great design flexibility.

Put into production in 2011 – with broad market prospects

As one of the most advanced systems on the market, the Continental Group's new control units have been well received by automotive manufacturers. The two major European manufacturers decided to put it into production in 2011, providing strong evidence for this. At present, other ordering items are in negotiation. Continental Group has become a leader in this fast-growing market. Analysts believe that not only is the number of LED applications in the car growing at an alarming rate – more than 800 points are just around the corner – and the speed of development for the headlamps is also quite fast. The analyst agency predicts that it will increase by 150% within the next three years.

Professor Dr. Tran Quoc Khanh, Professor of Lighting Engineering and Director of the Department of Lighting Engineering, Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany, stated: “The significant advantage of LEDs is that they have a longer lifetime than traditional headlights. Halogen bulbs can last up to 1,000 hours and can be filled with light bulbs. Achieves 2,000 hours while LEDs exceed 10,000 hours." The advantages of light-emitting diodes are also reflected in energy efficiency. “Also in automotive lighting engineering, high-output light-emitting diodes are extremely energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. This is due to their long life and high lighting efficiency – expected to increase to 150 lumens/watt in the next few years, and Good controllability."

Tightly networked LED control electronics

Continental is one of the few manufacturers on the market that fully integrates lighting control units into the automotive data flow system. This control unit communicates with the vehicle's central control electronics via LIN and CAN to handle information such as received speed, steering angle, driver lighting requirements, and read light and rain sensor data. In addition, the electronic unit has a modular structure that can easily be adapted for different applications on various types of vehicles.

In addition to intelligent electronic functions, the Continental Group's lighting control unit also has a number of physical advantages. In the compact size of the pocket calculator, the control unit integrates up to four control systems, which saves the car manufacturer valuable space at the front of the car. Unlike similar control systems, Continental's solution is not to integrate it in the lampshade, but to fix it as a separate component on the outside. In this way, when the headlight protective glass cover is damaged, the control device can still be used continuously, which will help reduce the insurance level and maintenance cost. In contrast, electronic devices can also be replaced without changing headlights. More importantly, this system can withstand extremely high temperatures in the engine compartment. Like the engine management system, Continental's cost-optimized lighting control electronics are extremely robust and are virtually immune to temperature changes. In the past, the design of LED headlamps was an excitement by many car manufacturers in many technical details. It was a "flashy" electronic device, and now LEDs can work together with the engine.

These lighting features that were first equipped with ordinary headlights only marked the beginning. In the next step, Continental Group developers will develop a matrix headlight control function, which helps to design more personalized headlights. On asphalt roads, the left and right turn signals of the navigation system can take the form of headlight projection signals. Alternatively, the system can trigger the spotlight to detect pedestrians on the shoulders ahead. It is undeniable that the emergence of such headlamp systems will take several years, but at least on the basis of such functions will help Continental introduce new control devices.

With the development of these aspects of the automotive lighting system, the application of LED technology is developing into the passenger vehicle compartment. With more than 20 years of mass production experience in related products, Continental has become a market leader in the application of LED technology for automotive dashboards.
