Statistics from China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that domestic auto market is picking up

Although many people believe that the domestic auto market remains sluggish and won't see significant changes until next year, recent data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers suggests a different story. Since July this year, monthly sales of domestically produced cars have hit their lowest point in months, but signs of recovery are becoming more evident. From January to September, sales of Chinese vehicles increased for three consecutive months, with the growth rate rising each month. At the same time, inventory levels at car manufacturers have been gradually decreasing, indicating that the market is starting to stabilize. Since China joined the WTO at the end of 2001, the domestic auto market experienced a period of rapid growth. In March of this year, sales hit a record high of 226,200 units in a single month. However, by April, the market began to show signs of fatigue, with sales declining for three consecutive months—falling to 220,100 in April, 177,700 in May, and 167,300 in June. Faced with declining sales and rising inventory, domestic automakers took action by reducing production and cutting costs, while also lowering prices to clear stock. In July, national car production dropped to 176,600 units, a decrease of 39,000 compared to June, or 22%. Sales, however, rose slightly to 169,900 units, showing early signs of stabilization. August saw continued declines in production to 171,900 units, but sales increased to 170,300, achieving a 99% sales rate. By September, the price-cutting strategy started to pay off, with sales reaching 194,100 units—a 13.94% increase from August. This was higher than the 184,700 units sold in February and marked the first time that monthly sales exceeded production. Among the top ten sedan manufacturers, only a few showed positive growth. North and South Volkswagen, Tianjin FAW Xiali, and Shenlong Automotive all reported negative sales growth, with Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW Volkswagen falling by 7.96% and 2.98%, respectively. Other companies saw even steeper drops. However, several others performed well: Changan Motors grew by 11.79%, Beijing Hyundai by 153.96%, Guangzhou Honda by 69.53%, Shanghai General Motors by 48.76%, and Chery by 43.34%. Experts note that after multiple rounds of price cuts, the prices of small, family-friendly cars are stabilizing. With oil prices remaining high and fuel costs hitting new peaks, more consumers are making rational purchasing decisions, taking into account both the initial cost and long-term expenses. Fewer buyers are opting for large engines or big vehicles, as evidenced by the growing popularity of compact, fuel-efficient sedans. The shift in consumer preferences, along with the increasing affordability and innovation of economical domestic models, is expected to drive a new wave of household car ownership. Meanwhile, some high-end domestic brands have also started to cut prices to boost sales. Overall, production and sales of cars in China increased by 22.02% and 20.68% respectively in the first three quarters of the year, and annual growth is still expected to exceed 20%, a strong performance compared to other global markets like Europe and the U.S.
