Ningbo Maritime AIS and VTS system successfully merged

The Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration has successfully integrated its Automatic Identification System (AIS) with the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system, marking a major advancement in maritime safety and efficiency. Ningbo, a key port city, experiences intense maritime traffic. On average, over 70 vessels pass through the Suimen Gate channel daily, and there are numerous passenger routes as well. This high volume of traffic increases the risk of vessel crossings and congestion. For many years, the maritime authorities primarily used the VTS system to monitor ship movements. However, this system lacked the ability to provide detailed information such as a vessel's name, speed, or course. As a result, officers had to rely on VHF radio communications to obtain real-time updates, which often took up valuable communication channels and delayed responses. In low-visibility conditions or at night, identifying distant vessels became extremely challenging, increasing the likelihood of collisions and near-misses. The integration of AIS and VTS has now transformed the way maritime authorities operate. With the combined system, officials can access real-time data, including navigational alerts and regulatory updates, without the need for constant VHF calls. This allows them to focus more on monitoring vessel movements within the port area, improving coordination between ships, and making more accurate assessments of traffic patterns. As a result, potential risks can be identified earlier, and safer navigation can be ensured, significantly enhancing the overall safety and efficiency of maritime operations in the region.
