A water ring pump operates by rotating a impeller inside the pump casing, creating a water ring that forms a crescent-shaped space between the impeller and the pump wall. On the right side of this crescent-shaped chamber, the volume gradually increases, forming the suction area where gas is drawn in through the intake pipe. As the rotor continues to turn, the left side of the crescent-shaped space begins to decrease in volume, which compresses the gas—acting as the compression or exhaust chamber. The compressed gas is then expelled through the exhaust port and exits via the exhaust pipe. As the gas leaves the pump, it mixes with water droplets, both entering a collection tank. In the tank, the gas separates from the water. The purified gas is then directed into the atmosphere through gas pipelines, while the water either flows back into the pump for reuse or is drained through a separate drainage pipe. The compression ratio of a water ring pump is determined by the position of the suction port and the exhaust port. The starting point of the suction port defines the volume of gas that enters the pump, while the position of the exhaust port determines how much gas is compressed and released during the exhaust phase. For a pump that has been designed and manufactured, the compression ratio can be calculated based on these geometric parameters. Understanding the relationship between these positions is crucial for optimizing the performance and efficiency of the pump. Adjusting the port locations can influence the pump’s ability to handle different types of gases and maintain proper vacuum levels.
