Xu Mingming, director of the Energy Development Bureau under the National Development and Reform Commission, recently stated that China possesses an estimated 31 trillion cubic meters of coal mine gas, a volume comparable to the country’s natural gas reserves.
"Attracting and utilizing coal mine gas is not only a key strategy for significantly improving coal mine safety but also an essential part of transforming waste into value, enhancing energy efficiency, and protecting the environment," Xu emphasized at the China International Coal Mine Gas Prevention and Utilization Conference.
Currently, about 16 trillion cubic meters of coal mine gas resources are considered economically viable for development. In Weinan, Shanxi Province, 40 gas wells are set to begin operations soon, marking the establishment of the first major gas production base in the region. This year alone, over 600 million yuan will be invested nationwide in gas development, with more than 330 wells drilled—surpassing the total investment and workload from the previous eight years combined.
Experts note that while coal mine gas can be a dangerous source of accidents, it is also a clean energy resource that should be harnessed rather than feared. Properly managing and utilizing this resource not only enhances mine safety and protects miners’ lives but also supports sustainable resource use and environmental protection.
According to the State Administration of Work Safety, 203 coal mines across the country have already implemented gas drainage systems. The current gas utilization rate stands at 41.1%, with plans to increase it to 50% during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period. Gas is primarily used for residential heating, power generation, industrial fuel, and chemical production, among other applications.
With growing investments and improved technologies, China is making significant progress in turning coal mine gas from a hazard into a valuable asset, contributing to both energy security and environmental sustainability.
