Arlington Heights PD & FD receive generous gifts

Henry E. Laseke, a quiet and loyal resident of Arlington Heights, left $400,000 in his will to support local emergency services. His estate gifted $200,000 each to the police and fire departments. Officials say the funds are already being used to purchase a new ambulance and will provide long-term support for the police K-9 unit over the next decade.

"He was a wonderful person," said Judy Filek, a close friend and executor of Laseke’s estate. "He wasn’t loud or attention-seeking, but he had a strong sense of community and loyalty."

Police Chief Gerald Mourning shared that he met with Laseke and his attorney around three years ago while the man was updating his will. Laseke expressed a desire to give back to the community in a meaningful way, and the chief suggested supporting the K-9 unit as a special contribution beyond the department’s regular budget.

Laseke, 89, died on July 25 after driving his Cadillac SUV into a pond near his home on Courtland Drive. According to police, he lost control of the vehicle, hit an electrical box and a balcony support before ending up in the water. Two neighbors tried to rescue him that morning.

While the dispatcher who spoke with Laseke during his final call was disciplined for mishandling the 911 call, internal records from the Northwest Central Dispatch System show that other calls about the same incident arrived just seconds later, suggesting the response time wasn't significantly affected.

This unexpected act of generosity highlights the impact one individual can have, even in the wake of a heartbreaking event. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of community support and the lasting legacy one person can leave behind.
