Arlington Heights PD & FD receive generous gifts
The Chicago Tribune recently published an article highlighting a generous donation made by the estate of Henry E. Laseke, who left a significant legacy for the Arlington Heights Police and Fire Departments. According to the report, Laseke, who passed away at the age of 89 after driving his Cadillac into a pond near his home on July 25, left $400,000 in his will to support local emergency services. The money was split evenly, with $200,000 going to each department. This generous gift has already been put to use, including the purchase of a new ambulance and funding for the police K-9 unit for the next decade. "He was a very kind and quiet man," said Judy Filek, a family friend and executor of the estate. "You wouldn’t notice him at first, but he had a strong sense of loyalty and cared deeply about his community." Police Chief Gerald Mourning confirmed that he had met with Laseke and his lawyer several years ago when the man was finalizing his will. During their conversation, Laseke expressed a desire to contribute to the community in a meaningful way, which led to the decision to support the K-9 unit. The incident that led to Laseke’s death occurred early on July 25 when he lost control of his SUV, struck an electrical box, and then hit a balcony support before ending up in a nearby pond. Two neighbors attempted to rescue him, but he ultimately drowned. Following the tragedy, a dispatcher who spoke with Laseke during his 911 call was disciplined for mishandling the call. However, internal documents from the Northwest Central Dispatch System indicated that the delay did not affect the overall response time, as other callers had already reported the same emergency moments earlier. This touching story highlights not only the impact of one individual’s generosity but also the importance of community support and the ongoing efforts of local emergency responders.
