Guangzhou plans to build a global auto parts production base
Recently, the Guangzhou Municipal Government announced that the city will focus on major automakers such as Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, following the "wagon-driven, nearby matching" principle, to develop a global auto parts production base. This strategic move aims to strengthen the automotive industry by aligning local supply chains with the needs of these leading manufacturers.
In 2005, Guangzhou produced a total of 406,000 vehicles, ranking second in China’s car production sector. The automobile manufacturing sector contributed 63 billion yuan to the local economy. With nearly 400 foreign-invested enterprises involved in auto parts production, the value of components reached 16.3 billion yuan that year. However, the ratio of parts to vehicle production was only 0.3:1, significantly below the international standard of 1.7:1, indicating substantial growth potential.
Looking ahead, it is projected that by 2010, Guangzhou's overall vehicle production capacity will reach 1.6 million units annually, with the auto parts industry generating approximately 100 billion yuan in output value. These figures highlight the city's ambitious goals to become a key player in the global automotive supply chain.
To support this vision, Guangzhou has planned a 15-square-kilometer Guangzhou Huadu Automobile City specifically for the Nissan project. The area will include zones for vehicle production, parts manufacturing, trade services, logistics, export processing, education, and R&D. The long-term plan envisions expanding the site to 50 square kilometers.
Toyota has also set up a large-scale Nansha International Automobile Industrial Park, covering nearly 20 square kilometers. A Panyu Auto High-Tech Industrial Base has been established nearby, further enhancing the region’s industrial capabilities. The proximity to Nansha Port, which handles over 1 million tons of containers and features berths capable of accommodating large vessels, provides a significant logistical advantage.
In the eastern part of Guangzhou, the Honda project has driven several key developments. This includes a 35.35-square-kilometer auto parts industrial base in the development zone and an additional 30 square kilometers in the Zengcheng Xintang industrial processing zone. These areas will be dedicated to vehicle and parts production, R&D, logistics, testing, display, and lifestyle services.
Additionally, a 5-square-kilometer auto parts production base is being developed in Huangpu District, integrating various aspects of auto parts manufacturing and storage. This comprehensive approach ensures that Guangzhou continues to build a robust and efficient automotive ecosystem.
