As a key component of China's "15th" National Major Technological Equipment Development Program, the large-scale fertilizer equipment R&D project was led by Shandong Hualu Hengsheng Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. The project was initiated in November 2004, based on the company’s technological upgrading of its 300,000-ton ammonia and 600,000-ton urea production facilities. After successfully producing qualified products, the system has operated safely and smoothly for over 20 months. On September 6, the project was officially accepted by an expert committee from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association and the China Machinery Industry Federation.
The project encompassed 19 key development topics, including process software packages, coal-water slurry gasification equipment, synthesis gas purification systems, ammonia synthesis units, and urea plant equipment. With a total investment of nearly 1.4 billion yuan, the localization rate reached an impressive 93.8%, significantly lower than the cost of importing similar equipment. This achievement marks a major breakthrough in domestic chemical manufacturing capabilities.
The acceptance committee highlighted that this project successfully developed core technologies and complete sets of equipment for large-scale fertilizers with independent intellectual property rights. It also marked the first time China produced a self-sufficient 300,000-ton ammonia synthesis system using coal as raw material, ending the era of relying on imported technology for large fertilizer installations. The project serves as a model for adjusting raw material structures in the nitrogen fertilizer industry, promoting technological upgrades among small and medium-sized companies, reducing energy consumption, protecting the environment, and raising overall industry standards.
It is worth noting that since the 1970s, when China introduced 13 sets of large-scale fertilizer installations, efforts to localize these systems had been ongoing. However, achieving full localization of complete installations remained a challenge. This time, Hualu Hengsheng not only developed proprietary software packages but also created key equipment and integrated the entire system. The overall technology level has reached international standards, with some components even surpassing global benchmarks.
Following the expansion and transformation, the company has evolved from a small nitrogen fertilizer producer into a large-scale enterprise capable of producing 1 million tons of urea annually. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its product range by extending into acetic acid production. This strategic move demonstrates its commitment to continuous innovation and growth in the chemical industry.
