Ambulance stolen from local hospital (more)

The *Daily Herald* has published a follow-up piece on the recent theft of an ambulance from Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. The incident, which took place late last week, involved a daring midnight escape that left local authorities scrambling to track down the stolen vehicle. According to police reports, Samantha Sligar managed to sneak out of the hospital and into an unlocked, idling ambulance around 4 a.m. Friday. At the time, two paramedics had just brought a patient into the emergency room and were in the process of restocking their supplies. Sligar made off with Ambulance No. 4, setting off a high-speed chase that would span over 150 miles. Two hours later, the ambulance was found disabled alongside Interstate 57 near Rantoul, Illinois. Sligar was taken into custody without resistance. When questioned, she claimed she was heading to her job at a St. Louis department store, but also mentioned she considered going to Marion, Illinois. She reportedly said her car and wallet had been stolen, though no evidence of this has been confirmed. What happened in between was nothing short of chaotic. Within 20 minutes of the theft, the paramedics realized their ambulance was missing, and an immediate alert was issued. Rolling Meadows police were the first to spot the vehicle, which then merged onto eastbound I-90. Multiple departments followed the ambulance as it sped through the highway, with law enforcement trying to intercept it at various points. At 4:40 a.m., an emergency alert was issued after the ambulance was spotted heading south on I-57. Authorities in Matteson attempted to stop it, but Sligar ignored their commands. Later, both Manteno police and Kankakee County officers tried to pull her over, but she continued speeding recklessly, running other vehicles off the road while flashing lights and blaring sirens. Police were cautious not to provoke an accident, even as she reached speeds of up to 80 mph. As the ambulance approached the Ford/Champaign county line, authorities faced a critical decision. Troopers who were supposed to take over the chase were instead responding to a major accident involving several semitrailers at milepost 211, causing a complete traffic standstill. In response, Rantoul police deployed spike sticks—tire-deflating devices designed to slow down the vehicle without causing a rollover. The spikes punctured the ambulance’s front left tire, but Sligar kept driving for a while before finally coming to a stop around milepost 250. She was arrested without incident and taken into custody. The ambulance, which had been used in the theft, was later seen back in service during a fire scene in Long Grove on Monday night. A photo of the vehicle, labeled as Ambulance 4, was included in the article, showing its return to duty after the dramatic incident.
