On December 6th, 2023, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) took a significant step forward in enhancing its emergency response capabilities by introducing a new asset to the Special Operations Division. The newly designated Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4 was officially added to the department’s fleet, marking a key development in urban rescue operations.
Based out of the Special Operations facility located at 39th and Honore, 5-2-4 is a customized X-Streets and Sanitation sewer vac truck that many may have spotted during the summer at the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show held at McCormick Place. This unit is built on an LN Series Ford chassis and has been upgraded by Rescue Vac Systems, a local company specializing in emergency rescue equipment. The modifications include advanced tools and systems designed for efficient trench rescue operations.
The primary role of 5-2-4 will be to respond to city-wide trench rescue incidents, providing rapid and effective assistance in emergencies involving collapsed structures or excavations. Additionally, through the MABAS Box Alarm System, the unit can also support suburban areas when needed, ensuring a broader reach for critical rescue efforts.
This addition reflects the CFD’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its resources and improving public safety. With its unique capabilities and strategic deployment, Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4 is expected to play a vital role in future emergency responses across the city and beyond.
