CFD Rescue Vac goes in service

On December 6th, 2023, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) announced the addition of a powerful new tool to its Special Operations Division. The newly designated Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4 has officially become part of the CFD’s emergency response fleet. Based at the Special Operations facility on 39th and Honore, this unit is a modified X-Streets and Sanitation sewer vac truck that many local residents may have seen during the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show last summer at McCormick Place. Built on an LN Series Ford chassis, the unit was customized by Rescue Vac Systems, a local company specializing in upgrading equipment for emergency rescue operations. This vehicle is specifically designed for trench rescue incidents across the city and will also be available for suburban operations through the MABAS Box Alarm System, ensuring rapid response capabilities beyond the city limits. The unit was previously used by the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation before being retrofitted with specialized rescue equipment. Its arrival marks a significant enhancement to the city’s ability to handle complex rescue scenarios, especially those involving confined spaces or collapsed structures. Two photos from the event show the unit on display and highlight the modifications made to convert it into a fully functional rescue vehicle. These images were captured by Larry Shapiro and provide a glimpse into the transformation of this once-standard sanitation truck into a vital asset for the fire department.
