Petroleum and Chemical Industry Top Priority

The Ministry of Science and Technology is taking significant steps to promote energy-saving and emission-reduction initiatives by identifying key projects and offering financial backing. Recently, the High-tech Division of the ministry released a notice calling for major scientific and technological projects focused on energy efficiency and emissions reduction in the industrial sector. Hu Qianlin, director of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, highlighted that the association is actively collaborating with the ministry to advance this initiative, encouraging the submission of key projects from critical industries and technologies. He emphasized that the oil and chemical industry holds substantial potential for energy savings and emissions cuts, making it a top priority for this program. According to officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the supported projects will cover four main areas: high-energy and resource-intensive industries, consumption reduction, ultra-low emission industrial wastewater treatment, and advanced equipment and materials for energy efficiency and emissions control. Additionally, renewable energy technologies are also included. The deadline for submitting proposals from local and petrochemical sectors is May 5. Following this, expert panels will evaluate the applications, select the most promising projects, and provide funding to address critical challenges. Hu Qianlin further revealed that the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association will focus on gathering project proposals from high-energy-consuming sectors like nitrogen fertilizers, two alkalis, sulfuric acid, and calcium carbide, as well as cleaner production processes in industries such as pesticides and dyes. While other sectors, including non-ferrous metals, building materials, and metallurgy, are also involved, the oil and chemical industry stands out due to its high energy and material consumption. As a result, it is expected to receive strong support and recommendations from the Ministry. It has been reported that the Ministry has recently placed great emphasis on enhancing energy-saving and emission-reduction efforts through technical innovation. To this end, a special expert group has been established. The plan includes implementing three "batches" in key areas, such as the petroleum and chemical industry: promoting a group of advanced and mature technologies, establishing demonstration projects for pilot-tested solutions, and developing a batch of cutting-edge technologies and process reserves. Moreover, the solicited projects aim to achieve both immediate and long-term benefits. The immediate impact refers to the annual energy savings and emission reductions realized after the successful industrialization of the projects. The long-term effect involves broader energy and emission reductions through technology and product adoption, including their market potential and capacity in both domestic and international markets. This strategic approach ensures that the projects not only deliver quick results but also contribute to sustainable development in the long run.
