This is Steve Redick reporting live from the scene. So, I was just planning to snap a few pictures of what I thought would be a simple job over on the 5700 block of Newark Avenue, just around the corner from Engine 119's station. Boy, was I wrong. What started as a small renovation fire quickly escalated into a full-blown mayday situation and a two-alarm blaze. It was a big old bungalow undergoing renovations, and reports came in that the fire had spread across multiple floors. Things got even trickier because it happened during this massive ice and snowstorm. Taking photos was nearly impossible—snow kept messing up the flash, and the natural light wasn't strong enough for clear shots. These pictures definitely don’t do justice to the usual quality I manage.
Anyway, I was standing safely across the street when I heard some shouting. Someone had apparently fallen into the basement. The Deputy District Chief called a mayday, and there was quite a bit of commotion. But they managed to get the injured person out pretty quickly. Later, I learned that the staircase between the first and second floors had collapsed, possibly due to the ongoing renovations. I saw two firefighters being carried out on backboards with neck braces, and a couple of others who seemed to be walking wounded. Eventually, all companies were ordered out of the building, and they took a “par†– basically regrouped and wrapped things up. From where I was, I couldn’t really tell much of what was happening inside. Maybe someone who was actually at the fire can fill us in on the details. Here’s the link to the video I recorded:

Attached are some photos. I believe everyone involved is okay. I’m curious about how this mayday played out given all the new radios and communication channels. I think this might have been one of the first major emergencies since everything got updated.
