Chicago Engine 2 ‘Christopher Wheatley’ – update

I just got back from the dedication ceremony for Chicago Fire Department’s new fireboat, Engine 2, named after Christopher Wheatley. The event was held right by the Chicago Firefighter Memorial, and there were quite a few people in attendance, including Commissioner Robert Hoff himself. Karl Klotz was kind enough to send over some photos he took, capturing the essence of the day. One of the first shots shows Commissioner Hoff addressing the crowd. His speech highlighted the importance of having state-of-the-art equipment like Engine 2 to protect our city. It was a touching moment when Christopher Wheatley’s mother came up to officially christen the boat. Karl managed to snap a great picture of that special occasion too. After the speeches, the ceremonies moved to the waterfront where Engine 2 made its debut. The boat looked impressive as it glided across the lake with a couple of other fireboats accompanying it. Karl also captured some fantastic action shots of the boat discharging water from its powerful turrets. There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing those streams of water being released—it really emphasizes the power and capability of this vessel. Larry Shapiro, another photographer who was present, already has a gallery of images available online. Although he hasn’t uploaded the official dedication ceremony photos yet, his collection gives a good preview of what Engine 2 looks like. Meanwhile, Gordon J. Nord Jr. has shared a few snapshots of the boat itself, though he mentioned he still needs to post the full set along with the ceremony shots. Another memorable part of the day was seeing the rear of Engine 2, which proudly displays its name alongside the Chicago Fire Department logo. Larry Shapiro managed to capture this detail beautifully in one of his photos. And let’s not forget about the “fast boat” that followed Engine 2 as it took to the lake filled with curious visitors. Karl’s image of this chase is particularly striking. All in all, it was an inspiring day celebrating both the memory of Christopher Wheatley and the commitment of the Chicago Fire Department to maintaining top-notch emergency response capabilities on the water. I’m grateful to have been able to witness such an important event, and I’m sure these new additions will make a significant difference in keeping our city safe.
