Springfield FD adding small squads

The Springfield Fire Department recently placed an order with Alexis for two compact rescue vehicles designed to complement their existing fleet. These smaller units, mounted on Ford F-550 chassis, aim to assist ambulances while reducing stress on the department's heavier apparatus. The StateJournal Register featured an article detailing these developments, highlighting some key points: According to Fire Chief Ken Fustin, the introduction of these squads will help preserve the longevity of the department’s larger and more costly firefighting equipment. Approximately 60% of the department’s calls are medical emergencies, making these smaller vehicles a strategic addition. Last year, city aldermen approved the acquisition of two such rescue vehicles. The department sourced two 2012 Ford F550 chassis from Landmark Ford and is currently outfitting them with custom-built rescue bodies through Alexis Fire Equipment, whose bid was the lowest among competitors. The total expenditure for this project amounts to $200,822. Fustin has also proposed a budget allocation of $125,000 for another rescue vehicle in the upcoming fiscal year. His goal is to have all three units operational by the end of December. With these new additions, the department anticipates handling around 4,000 to 5,000 fewer calls annually using fire trucks and engines. In 2011, the fire department responded to 16,431 service requests, with approximately 58%, or 9,527, classified as medical calls. For visual context, the image below shows a small rescue body being constructed specifically for the Springfield Fire Department by Alexis. As someone who has been following local news closely, I find it fascinating how Springfield is adapting its resources to better serve the community. These smaller squads not only streamline operations but also ensure that emergency personnel can respond more efficiently to medical emergencies. It’s exciting to see how technology and planning come together to enhance public safety!
